Sitting down to write a persuasive essay can be a daunting process. The theory is simple –

1. Title
2. Thesis
3. Paragraph 1 with supporting facts.
4. Paragraph 2 with supporting facts.
5. Paragraph 3 with supporting facts.
6. Conclusion and summary with call to action.

But try to put this theory into practice and many people stare at a blank page (or computer screen). How do you get started? In this article I have a couple of killer tips to write that persuasive essay.

Free Writing

No one expects you to sit down and write perfectly crafted prose on your first attempt. Putting that expectation on yourself straight up is a sure fire way to bring on writer’s block. If you are staring at a blank page, try free writing.

Just relax and write. Write whatever comes into your mind about your chosen topic. Don’t stop to edit. Don’t even bother creating whole sentences or separate paragraphs if you don’t want to. Just keep writing.

You can set a time limit if you want, for example, 10 minutes. After your initial spurt of activity, read through what you have written for ideas to develop further. All of the articles I write for this website started out as free writing. The first few lines of free writing for this post looked like –

Starting to write … daunting process. Theory is simple. Title thesis supporting paragraphs conclusion. How do you get started … free writing … mind maps …

Your free writing might end up as points to develop further. It might even be complete paragraphs you can use in your final composition. If you sit down and free write for just 10 minutes, you will often end up with 300 words of good material.

Mind Maps

The second trip to getting started is a mind map. This has helped people chunk down their problems (no, that is not a reference to beer and pizza night gone bad) for decades. Put simply, a mind map is a diagram linking ideas on a piece of paper and is a fantastic brainstorming tool.

To start, grab a scrap piece of paper. In the centre, write down the idea you are trying to convince your audience about.

What is the main reason they should believe you? What benefit do you they get from siding with you? Draw this in a box off the right and link the two.

Now list 2 or 3 facts that support your first reason. Discuss them with a few bullet points. Link these back to your First Reason box. Now come up with your Second Reason and a Third Reason, each with their own supporting facts.

You know have a diagram that looks like a bit of a pyramid. One goal, three reasons, 2 or 3 facts per reason. Now stand back and look at what you have just created. It might not be art, but it is an outline. What you are trying to convince people of is your thesis statement. Each of the reasons are the subjects for your supporting paragraphs. And each supporting paragraph already has some facts you can use to create authority with your readers.

The essay as a whole can be a little daunting. But break it down into manageable chunks and you are quickly on your way to writing your persuasive essay.

Listen closely. You’re going to have to come closer than that. Closer … Shhh, can you do me a favour and keep a secret? Don’t tell anyone but I am about to reveal how pro-bloggers never run out of writing ideas!. How they are constantly overflowing with fresh ideas and stay on the cutting edge.

Okay, enough of the theatrics (hey, I was bored …) – time to get straight to the point.. My top tip for keeping a constant flow of writing ideas for your persuasive essay to is to use Google News and Blogs.

For this exercise, head on over to google.com. Across the top left hand side of the page you will see a menu. I can see Web, Images, Maps, News, Video, Gmail and More. Click on News.

If you have never been here before, this is Google’s news page. This page will be full of news headlines and is fully customizable. If you are looking for general writing ideas, this page is packed full of goodies. But for this exercise I am going to assume you have a rough idea on what you want to write about. My topic will be solar power.

Enter your chosen topic into the Google search bar and hit Search News.

The page that loads will now have a series of news articles from around the world that relate to your phrase. By default, the articles are sorted by relevance. You can sort by date using the choices at the top right of the page.

Scroll down the results. Do you see anything interesting for your research? In my results, the first 4 are –

Solar panels – beware of counterfeits (Energy Matters – Australia)
LG announces solar powered mobile (Techradar – UK)
Bharat hot on solar cookers, new energy (Times of India – India)
Dow at work on solar power shingles (Toronto Star – Canada)

It would not take you long to amass several articles that will give you some great ideas.

Another hot source of writing ideas on this page is the Google Blog search. In the left hand side menu you will find the menu heading Blogs. Click on this.

The Blog search is similar to the News search, but this shows recent blog entries from the web. I can see blog entries on DIY solar and cutting coal use with solar power. News will give you some good factual information while blogs can be more opinionated. Both are great places to start your search.

Warning – News feeds and blogs are great places to do research. Don’t copy what you find here as your own work. Duplicate content filters will spot that in the blink of an eye. What you can do is use the research as guidance. What is your opinion on what you have read? Write about that instead.

How do you use a quote? That’s the easy part. Pick a line from below you like. Perhaps it has made you think. Perhaps it made you laugh. Now what do you have to write about. Can you make a connection between the two? Let’s take a quote from John Mendoza – “You know you’re getting old when you can pinch an inch on your forehead”. There is world of scope just from these 14 words. How about society’s attitude to beauty as we age? Or the physical effects of ageing? What else can you think of? Here are a few quotes to give you some inspiration.

“Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been. ” Mark Twain

How about some funny life quotes -

“My husband and I didn’t sign a pre-nuptial agreement. We signed a mutual suicide pact.” Roseanne Barr

“If variety is the spice of life, marriage is the big can of leftover Spam.” Johnny Carson

“In my house I’m the boss, my wife is just the decision maker.” Woody Allen

“In many instances, marriage vows would be more accurate if the phrase were changed to ‘Until debt do us part’. Sam Ewing

“Marriage is give and take. You’d better give it to her or she’ll take it anyway.” Joey Adams

According to Google, people just like you searched for “writing ideas” an incredible 74000 times world wide last month. That’s a staggering number and means they ended up at Google because they have absolutely no idea what to write about. Stuck for ideas? Come on, it’s not that hard. I am about to share with you my best tip for finding socially interesting topics to write about that will save you hours of agony.

Open your browser and head over to www.digg.com Now, if you are under 30 and know how to turn a computer on, then there is a good chance you don’t need me to explain what social bookmarking is. So just slip on the ipod headphones for a minute while I give a short and simple definition for the rest of my readers.

For everyone else, www.digg.com is what we call a social bookmarking site. Have you ever found a site that interests you and added it to your favorites in Internet Explorer?* It makes it easy to come back to because you like the site.

Well, the internet is a global community. If you like the site, then do you think other people might want to know about it too? Instead of adding it to your favorites on your computer, you can do it on a social bookmarking site so other people can see it. If they agree and like it too, they can vote on the article. Go to www.digg.com and you can see the most popular stories at the moment.

Just about any article on the front page is a good place to start your search for writing ideas. Scroll down and see what interests you. At the time of writing, I can see –

Samsung launches solar-powered phone.
Man gets 20 weeks in jail for whistling.
Casinos on alert for card counters using iPhones
NASA’s 10 greatest achievements

If you are free to write about anything, then it will only take a few seconds for some great ideas. If you have a range of topics to keep to, use the search function at the top of the page.

Want some extra credit? Remember it is the controversial topics that get attention. Scroll down the front page articles. What has the most comments? If an article has 800 diggs (votes) and 30 comments, then it may be a little conservative. If it has 600 diggs and 400 comments, then that is a hot topic to write about.

* Now don’t send me hate mail because I mentioned Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, Flock etc etc. If someone does not know what social bookmarking is, then I would bet 99% of the time they are using IE.

What is the most important feature in an online article on a web page, or even a college essay for that matter?

It’s the title.

A title is like a flashing neon sign. They have to grab attention. Think about it – in the digital age there is so much information competing for attention. Your article does not get special preference – it has to compete just as hard to be read.

When asked this question, author Steve Gillman said that digital article titles have to do more than those in the print world. In a print magazine, you just need to catch the attention of the reader. The title doesn’t really even have to tell the reader what the article is about, since the magazine it is in will be on a specific subject area. Readers know that if it is in a fishing magazine it about a fishing-related topic.

In an online article, on the other hand, the title has to tell the potential reader what the article is about. He may see nothing but the title in the search engine results, and if he doesn’t know what it’s about, he’s likely to just click on the next link. Online article titles have to be found in the search engines as well, meaning they have to have keywords in them that people are looking for. Of course, just like print articles, they should also catch the reader’s attention.

My Best Article Titles

Sometimes you can do all three of these things pretty well in one article. An example is my article titled “Cheap Homes In Nice Towns.” You know what the article is about, it is okay as an attention grabber (not great), and “cheap homes” is a keyword that many people search for each month. At one of the article directories I have submitted it to, it has been read over 17,000 times – more than double the traffic of any of the other 550 articles I have there (many have been read only a couple hundred times).

However, in checking the number of times my various articles have been viewed at this directory, I have often been surprised – enough so to remind me that “rules” are only guidelines. For example, two of the most-read articles I have there are “Remove Permanent Marker From Carpet,” and “How To Get Candle Wax Out Of Carpet” (about 6,000 times each).

These are not attention-grabbing titles, but they are also not topics covered well on the Internet. Obviously there is something to be said for utilitarian articles with good keywords that are not too competitive. Add easy-to-compete-for keywords to the list of things to try for in an article title.

In the top five for visits are the article titles, “Really Cheap Plane Tickets,” (6,400) and “Cheap International Plane Tickets” (10,050). A promise of a way to save money seems to be a good bet. My article “Worry – Five Ways To Eliminate It,” has been viewed 3,300 times, but it is fairly new, making it the most views per month by far. I suppose worry is a common enough problem that people need a solution to.

Article titles that promise to help with a problem work, then. So do those that promise to teach the reader something new, and those that are directly targeting the keywords they are searching. What else can make for a good article title?

- Ask a question: “Do You Make This Writing Mistake?”

- Tell them they can do something: “You Can Write A Better Title Today”

- Promise some value: “Ten Ways You Can Make More Money”

- Use the words “how to”: “How To Overcome Writer’s Block”

- Involve them with a story: “You Quit Your Job – Now What?”

Watch the reports (at the article directories and on your web sites) and try to learn from them. Of course those statistics for “views” I mention above only tell me how many times people started to read my articles. Did they finish the articles? Did they then click through to my web sites? There is more to good online writing than good article titles.

For any student of writing nearing graduation, the question that often comes to mind is what job you will get after graduation. If you have good literacy skills, one career to consider is as an article writer. Many publications in both the print media and online continually look for quality writers. You may end up as a staff member or as a freelancer – regardless, there is always work for a talented writer.

Writing your first paid article can be really challenging, after all people are paying to read your work. But with practice and determination, this task will get easier overtime. Here’s how you can jump-start your article writing:

1. Establish your reasons. Why do you want to write articles? Write down the reasons why you’re writing your articles in a piece of paper and post it in front of your computer or where you can easily see it each time you’re writing your articles. You will need to do this as your objectives will keep you going and will help you not to get off tracked in the long run.

2. Define your audience. Who are the people who’ll read your articles? Are they coming from US or from Middle East and Asia? What language are they using? Are you writing for men or women or both? What is their age bracket? What put them in a position of needing your expertise in your chosen niche? Research your target audience thoroughly. The more information you gather about these people, the better.

3. Learn the ropes of creating killer, punchy titles. What makes a certain title very effective? Based on experience, you can get more people to pay attention to your articles if your titles are very descriptive (they must summarize your content) and benefit-driven (tell your readers what’s in it for them). It would also help if you keep them short and if you make them sound very smart.

4. Know how to impress your readers. What can you possibly do to leave your readers 100% satisfied? Well, you must offer them with information that they can use in reaching their dreams or in improving the quality of their lives. It would also dramatically help if you make your articles easy to understand and enjoyable to read.

5. Keep your readers interested. As a writer, you obviously would want your audience to read your articles until the end. This can happen if you know how to hold their attention. I suggest that you use the inverted pyramid technique. Also, ensure that each of your paragraphs is worthwhile. They must each contain compelling information that will wow your readers.

6. Use keywords. Aside from focusing on giving your readers with great content and great reading experience, you also need to focus on making your copies search engine-friendly. This is something that you need to do so your target audience will easily find your articles online. Perform a keyword research and use popular terms together with their synonyms on your articles.

7. Make your articles readable. Your audience will surely be enticed to read your articles until the end if they’re easy on the eyes. Break them down into several short segments. Use very short paragraphs that contain no more than 5 sentences. Also, use subheadings and tell your readers ahead of time what your next paragraph is all about.

8. Be confident. Sound like somebody who’s an authority in your chosen niche when writing your articles. You must be 100% sure on the information that you’re giving out and you must deliver the information you have with strong conviction. You will need to do this if you don’t want your readers to doubt your credibility and expertise.

9. Stick with facts. Although exaggerating things can initially help you capture the attention of your target audience, this will not help you build a great reputation in the online arena. So, stick with truth and do not resort to blatant lies.

What does it take to be a writer? Obviously it will take a love of literacy, the ability to tell a good story and an expressive mind. But how many of us have started down this path of being a writer to stop just a few chapters into that epic first book. Even worse, you might be thinking “I will get back to it when I sort out what to write next”. Many good stories are laying on shelves right now covering dust as long forgotten projects. So if you are thinking about writing a book, I have some life experience from a guest author to share -

Early in our married life I confided to Mary Patricia (my wife) that one day in the future, I wanted to be a writer. Years came and went and I never really had either the time or the burning passion to write. Then retirement came. My lovely wife said, well your time has come: become a writer!

Having had a career as a concert pianist, Mary Patricia gave me the best piece of advice: “Just like a concert pianist, a writer must practice. You remember how I used to practice five or six hours a day? Well-practice from now on. You must write every day.”

Who would read my stuff, I asked. “Start a blog,” was the answer I gave myself.

I did. But unsatisfied with just writing a blog, I also decided to start writing a novel. And soon enough I finished my long mystery entitled The Poison Pill.

So what is next? Okay, I followed with a deluge of essays and short stories.

In one site alone, my stories called “Mary Patricia and I” more than one hundred thousand readers have been entertained with my writing. This is something that really massages my ego. I love the fact that I have an audience. I love the e-mail I get. Even the stern criticism I get is welcome. Nothing can motivate a writer than the certainty that real people are reading your material and enjoying it.

A friend of mine who is about my age, told me that he wanted to start writing; that he had a million ideas and experiences just waiting to be penned. That was 4 years ago. To today he hasn’t written one single line. So I asked him,

“Why haven’t you written anything?”

“Well, I got ideas, but I don’t know where to start,” was his answer.

“Let me show you my formula,” I added.

And for the next two hours or so I shared with him, how it is that I am so prolific.

“Where do you get your ideas for your stories and articles from?” My stock answer is from my daily activities, which include really humdrum, mundane acts that everyone performs.

My first act in the morning is to make a fresh pot of coffee. As I do this chore I find myself thinking about a myriad things that have happened in the past, things that I will handle during the day, or things that I may contemplate doing in the future. This is an enjoyable task. Since no one is around to engage me in conversation or disrupt my thinking, I withdraw and walk freely around the many chambers of my mind.

While Socrates had demon that would talk to him and forbid him to do certain things, I also have my demons; but these little creatures instead of forbidding me prompt me to action.

It may seem weird to some people, but sometimes I hear whispers or see figures, shapes, forms, and profiles of beings that are begging for attention. Just this morning Bill Gates and Warren Buffet popped out of the blue -maybe, I am not so sure- and I was curious as to why these two characters would occupy my mind. Doing a little backtracking I realized that the previous night I had been reading a book of essays and letters by Seneca, the Stoic philosopher who was forced to commit suicide by the vicious Caligula.

The above mentioned trio then gave me the idea for an article on why some people pursue not happiness but wealth and power. While the coffee percolates, I take a little walk to Tal Bagels (my local deli) where I buy croissants, elephant ears, or any other coffee roll. When I return I have my breakfast, watch “Morning Joe” and read the newspapers. By the time I go to my computer, the 500-word article on Bill Gates, Warrant Buffet, and Seneca practically writes itself.

At noon I take a long walk from: 30 minutes west and 30 minutes east. This is a daily routine. During my meanderings I observe people, traffic, activities out on the street. I don’t make a deliberate effort to focus or try to remember anything. I simply observe.

When something catches my attention, I will record the incident or event in one of my three basic directories:

Raw materials

Work-in-process

Finished goods

As my ideas take shape I move them from directory to directory. In the “Works-in-process” directory I keep some basic folders:

Short stories

Essays and articles

Novels

Accounting and business

My ‘Short stories’ folder contains numerous files with ideas for stories. For example: at the moment I have these files: Confessions: Tolstoy, Rousseau, and Augustine; the Weekend guest; Lies I Will Tell at my College Reunion; My Favorite Lovable Villains; Was Gregor Samsa a Vermin or a Republican? Was Xanthippe (Socrates’ wife) Rich? Etc.

“But why list them all when you can make your own list,” I told my friend.

“Wow! That’s organization. I’ve been so scattered,” he said, his eyes saddened.

So, within the next few minutes I finished telling him my secrets. “When I complete an article or story, I move the file to a different directory:-the ‘Finished Goods,’ folder.”

To be prolific a writer has to be well organized, for the distractions are many. Having outlined my directories and files doesn’t mean that they form a system. They work for me because I am also an accountant, and that is how accountants keep books.

And when one has to make hard choices about our precious time, guess what prevails? If you answer is: the activity that requires least effort-I will agree. Last night I had plans to put a good dent in my novel, but the World Series beckoned.

“How about them Yankees!” my friend exclaimed. “I really don’t have much discipline to stick to a daily schedule-but I now see I must,” he added.

“I’ll just share one more thought,” I said, “then we’ll leave it alone.”

And I proceeded to tell my friend about my favorite author Anthony Trollope: “Trollope wrote 47 novels, 16 other books among which we find travelogues and serious commentaries on Cesar and Cicero. Trollope discovered that ‘A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labours of a spasmodic Hercules.’ And never did he deviate from his allotted daily writing. This quotation is taped on top of my computer to remind me to do my own small daily task, faithfully.”

“Incredible! I’ve read some of his novels. And they are huge volumes! This is really a revelation; I suppose writing something everyday will eventually grow into serious number of pages. I like that. “

“Trollope did all writing while holding a full time job at the post office.”

“Thanks for the tips. I got to run and write at least 200 words–right now!”

I wondered whether that was just a spasm or the beginning of a lifetime of writing?

Ask any creativity expert and he will tell you “it helps to get a lot of ideas, more ideas you get, the better chance of hitting at a fresh solution.” But the question that baffles everyone is: how?

Because in reality, forget a lot of ideas, people don’t even get a few ideas to start with. Here are some tips to help you get ideas quickly:

Empty your mind:

Write everything that comes to your mind about that subject.

These may not be ideas, just your thoughts and preconceived notions about the situation. Write everything. Once these ideas are out you can think of some fresh ones.

Keywords:

Write all the key words associated with your opportunity at hand. These Keywords will become your gateways to ideas.

Phrase these keywords differently and see what happens. For example in this article instead of “keywords” I can say “words which are important to understand the concept” or the phrase “words that unlock the meaning” of a situation.

Now these phrases will give you cues to get more ideas.

Associations:

Start free-wheeling. Record all the associations that come to your mind about the opportunity and start creating ideas on those associations.

Write down all the jokes, all the anecdotes, all the lyrics that this situation reminds you.

Does it remind you of a movie scene? Write it down. It reminds you of a picnic where some funny thing happened? Record it.

Don’t judge. Play with whatever your brain gives you.

For example “Mother” will take you to “love”

Mother > love > Now love can lead to “romance” or “security” or ‘war” depending on your life experiences, context of the situation and mental state at the moment.

Keep writing as many ideas you can capture.

Write a book:

Pretend as if you are an expert author on the subject you want ideas for. Now think of possible book titles about the situation. Also add the subtitles to get a fresh angle.

For example:

How to think of a truckful of ideas under tight deadlines?

Idea mining: Where to dig to get good ideas.

Instant ideas: Whenever you want

Invite ideas: They are eager to come

The gang of Ideas: They never come alone

Now these titles will become a trigger for ideas.

All the ideas are a possible seed for the next idea. Like the book title above reads, Ideas have gangs, they never come alone!

Invite ideas:

Read a magazine or a newspaper and invite the headlines in your situation. See what will happen if you write your keywords in those headlines!

It will spark new combinations and many more ideas.

Do the same with shopping catalogues. See how a fashionable handbag can help you get the best of your opportunity.

Or a lipstick can help you create ideas?

For example I can say;

Try different shades of the idea you have generated. It will help you generate more ideas. What if I change the shades of verbs in my ideas?

Instead of, how to think of ideas quickly, what if I ask:

How to find ideas quickly? Or, how to cook ideas quickly?

What about, how to spice up your ideas instantly?

Build on ideas:

Write down all the ideas on a big sheet where the ideas can gang up together.

Now let them cross over from one gang to another.

New gangs will be created. Keep on recording the ideas.

Fill in the blanks:

On your idea sheet write numbers:

1:

2: . . .

60:

Human brain has a tendency to fill in the blanks. When there will be an expectation for ideas, it will provide.

Reward yourself:

Give yourself a good treat when you crack a good number of ideas. Reward yourself for number of ideas as well as good ideas.

Give yourself idea targets:

Creating ideas is a skill. You get better at it with practice.

So give increasing targets to yourself regularly. Achieving these targets will encourage and convince you, creating so many ideas is possible.

How great would it be to walk by a book store and see your title sitting in the window and have it be the buzz on the street? There are very few people walking around who have not thought about writing their own book at one point or another, but it is often dismissed as they just don’t seem to be able to come up with what they think are good book writing ideas.

The first place you need to look when you are looking for book writing ideas is right in your own life. You can only write will about what you know so don’t think you are going to be able to write the next great cook book if you have never fired up your own stove.

As you are looking over your life, hobbies, passions and job experiences, you should put them all down on paper as they come to you. Don’t let anything slip by you, there is nothing to small or mundane to put down when you are in the creative process.

Once you have a list of possible topics, do a little research and see what people are interested in. For instance, if your hobby is building miniatures but you only find a couple of websites about it and they are not getting a lot of traffic, you may want to look at something different for the time being.

Ideas for writing a book are featured just about everywhere in our own lives. All you have to do is look a little deeper and find the parts of these experiences that are interesting and amusing. Remember, for every experience or job that you have had, there are plenty of other people that have experienced the same things. After all, what do you migrate towards in the book store? Probably a book that relates to something that you have experienced so you can lose yourself in the book. Just write it down and you will be surprised at what people find interesting.

At times when writing, ideas will need to be extracted from the inner parts of our brains. Due to the fact that they get cluttered with junk and other unnecessary stuff from our every day life. It is easily done by getting distracted and allowing them to take over. When this happens the information has to be obtained with as much effort as possible.

This slows us down having to dig deep into our minds to withdraw what we are looking for and trying to find. The hidden data is held up and will take a 3 step process to free it…

Step 1: Separate the usable prize thoughts from the unusable scattered brain thinking with no real meaning. Each time we look or feel something it sends thought patterns through our minds like a title wave. A decision has to be made what to do with it.

Step 2: Determine what will be kept to be used, saved, and trowed away in the garbage. Our minds is like a file system that needs to be maintained on a regular basis. How often it needs to be maintained is up to you. But, I recommend do not let things pile up, so daily is a good maintenance program.

Step 3: Select what will be exerted choosing carefully what to pull out. But, now it should be easier and make things more efficient. Seeing your productivity level excel above normal. Just because you took out the rummage.

All this is done by drawing forth from the research already previously done. To take the required steps the advance forward making things a lot better. It is not a simple process but needs to always be taken care of.
